'Kareube' Myrrh Fertilizer: A New Hope for Sweet Potato Farming at the Southern Tip of Korea
Myrrhzone Molyac Institute (CEO Ji-an Kim), a specialized firm in myrrh fermentation research, is garnering significant attention from local farmers in Haenam. The institute's independently developed, eco-friendly patented antimicrobial fertilizer, 'Kareube,' has proven highly effective in boosting sweet potato production.
'Kareube' is an antimicrobial patented microbial fertilizer developed by Dr. Jin-woo Kim, Director of Myrrhzone Molyac Institute. It is formulated with 100% natural substances, combining MHS-90 (a patented fermented myrrh complex extract; Patent No. 10-1710673) with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, a beneficial plant bacterium.
We met with Jae-seok Yoon, CEO of 'Woori Farm,' who has been cultivation sweet potatoes in Haenam for 30 years, to hear about the effects of the fertilizer.
"In recent years, viral diseases frequently ruined our sweet potato crops," Yoon said. "Last year, I met CEO Suk-yi Kim of The Myrrh Life and conducted a trial cultivation on a 990㎡ plot. The results were remarkable—only the areas treated with 'Kareube' remained disease-free. Furthermore, the sweet potatoes grew larger and tasted better. This year, trusting in 'Kareube,' I planted sweet potatoes across approximately 594,000㎡."
Before using 'Kareube,' Yoon had seriously considered quitting sweet potato farming, as viral outbreaks were impossible to control even with heavy use of antimicrobials. However, since switching to 'Kareube,' he observed that no viral diseases occurred even during the monsoon season, and the stalks grew sturdy and firm rather than rotting.
Research has shown that Myrrh, the primary raw material of 'Kareube,' contains various active compounds such as polyphenols and terpenoids.
According to a paper published by Dr. Jin-woo Kim in the journal Applied Sciences, myrrh’s polyphenols include anti-inflammatory agents like tannic acid, rutin, and quercetin. Its terpenoids contain antiviral components such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene and curzerene. Notably, the MHS-90 in 'Kareube' is composed of 5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural), which protects cells from oxidative stress and prevents aging, and 2-HBA (2-Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol), which plays a key role in anti-inflammatory actions.
Through the synergy of these active ingredients and microbes, 'Kareube' provides multiple benefits, including soil improvement, enhanced photosynthesis, and accelerated growth. It helps farmers reduce costs and increase profits without the concern of residual pesticides. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of the fermented myrrh complex are expected to effectively prevent damage from fungi and viruses.
"I was able to find hope again in sweet potato farming thanks to 'Kareube,'" Yoon stated. "I was surprised not only by the virus prevention but also by how large the sweet potatoes have grown even before the harvest season. I am excited to provide truly delicious sweet potatoes to consumers this year."
Myrrh is a gum resin obtained from the bark of trees in the Commiphora genus (Burseraceae family). In Traditional Oriental Medicine, it is known to promote blood circulation, reduce swelling to alleviate pain, and aid in tissue regeneration. Today, it is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and boil-treating properties.
