'Kareube,' the Patented Antimicrobial Fertilizer Combining Fermented Myrrh Complex and Soil Microbes: A Dual Solution for Crop Growth and Pest Control
Myrrhzone Molyac Institute (Biorootics Co., Ltd.), a specialized firm in myrrh fermentation research led by CEO Ji-an Kim, announced on the 2nd that its study published in the SCI-indexed global journal Applied Sciences confirmed an 81.2% reduction in the influenza virus through antiviral testing of myrrh extracts. Based on these findings, the institute has begun distributing 'Kareube,' an antimicrobial patented fertilizer that integrates fermented myrrh complex extract with soil microorganisms, to agricultural farms.

Myrrh (Kareube) is a natural substance harvested from the bark of Commiphora myrrha, a plant in the Burseraceae family native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It appears as pale yellow or dark brown resinous granules.

According to the paper published by Dr. Jin-woo Kim (Ph.D. in Engineering, Fermentation Specialist), Director of Myrrhzone Molyac Institute and developer of the Kareube microbial fertilizer, the study identified key polyphenols in myrrh, including tannic acid, rutin, and quercetin. It also revealed representative terpenoids, such as furanoeudesma-1,3-diene and curzerene.
Dr. Kim explained, "The research demonstrated that quercetin and rutin are effective anti-inflammatory agents, while furanoeudesma and curzerene are effective in virus reduction. Our antiviral experiments confirmed an 81.2% decrease in the influenza virus when treated with myrrh extract."
He further detailed the analysis of the fermented myrrh complex (MHS-90), stating, "The components were identified as 2-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol and 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural is researched for its antioxidant properties, while 2-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol is known for its anti-inflammatory effects."
Leveraging the development of MHS-90 and its corresponding patent (No. 10-1710673), the institute is supplying the Kareube fertilizer to farms, where it is already showing practical success in sweet potato cultivation.
Jae-seok Yoon (73), CEO of 'Woori Farm,' who has farmed sweet potatoes in Haenam for 30 years, shared his experience: "I frequently lost crops to viral diseases in previous years. However, areas treated with Kareube remained disease-free, and the sweet potatoes grew larger and tastier. This year, trusting entirely in Kareube, I planted 594,000㎡ of sweet potatoes and look forward to providing high-quality produce to consumers."
