Biorootics Secures Patent for Methane-Reducing Feed Technology Using Myrrh and Kenaf
Biorootics, a specialized firm in myrrh fermentation, announced on the 18th that it has officially been granted a patent from the Korean Intellectual Property Office for its “Method for Manufacturing Animal Methane-Reducing Feed Using Myrrh and Kenaf” (Patent Registration No. 10-2832263).
Coinciding with this technological achievement, the company has officially changed its name from Myrrhzone Molyac Institute to Biorootics.

Ji-an Kim, CEO of Biorootics, stated, “To foster our growth as a truly global enterprise, we have rebranded our 11-year-old name to Biorootics, which signifies our mission to 'study the roots of life.' We are expanding our business scope to encompass human, plant, and animal wellness. Through this new patent, we aim to become a leader in environmental protection and greenhouse gas reduction.”
Myrrh (Kareube) is a natural resin harvested from the bark of Commiphora myrrha. Extensive research has shown that it possesses significant properties for pain relief, blood circulation improvement, and anti-inflammation. Biorootics has previously succeeded in developing MHS-90 (a fermented myrrh complex), which is already utilized in food, cosmetics, and microbial fertilizers.
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), a high-impact carbon-absorbing plant, is known to absorb up to nine times more CO2 than pine trees. Its leaves contain approximately 29% crude protein—higher than beef—and are rich in polyphenols, offering potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Dr. Jin-woo Kim, Director of Biorootics and the lead inventor of the methane-reducing feed, explained, “This patent focuses on a manufacturing method designed to reduce methane emissions from ruminants. By combining the antimicrobial power of Myrrh with the nutrient-dense, mineral-rich Kenaf, we have created a solution that effectively suppresses methane-producing microbes through the synergistic interaction of polyphenols, terpenoids, and tannic acids.”
Dr. Kim, widely recognized as a leading authority on myrrh research, has previously published findings in the SCI-indexed journal Applied Sciences, proving myrrh's efficacy against influenza viruses.
CEO Ji-an Kim added, “Methane emissions from cattle are a critical issue directly linked to human survival and welfare. Feeding livestock our myrrh-infused low-carbon feed can drastically reduce methane released during eructation (burping). We expect our fermented MHS-90 and Kenaf complex to be a game-changer in reducing the carbon footprint of the livestock industry.”
With the recent passage of the ‘Hanwoo Act’ in the National Assembly, the value of methane-reducing feed is gaining renewed attention. The industry anticipates fierce competition in the low-carbon feed market as the government begins mandating carbon neutrality plans and providing incentives for eco-friendly livestock farming.
